I think you're making a mountain out of a mole hill here. Upgrading the database is easy. However, there are certain steps you need take depending on what options you have installed on the database and are using, for instance, oracle JVM loaded into the db.

Check out technet.oracle.com or metalinks, there's docs in there that give you step by step instruction on what to do for upgrading the database. At a very high level, this is what you need to do:

  1. Determine the options you have installed on the OS
  2. Load the new version, 8.1.7, in a different oracle home, btw, follow the IG(that's Installation Guide).
  3. Determine what's used in the DB, jvm, AQ, etc....
  4. Convert the database, this is simple, one script is run.
  5. Upgrade the jvm and other options in the DB.

This is more or less cookbook upgrading from 8.1.6 to 8.1.7. I also suggest you do you upgrade to a test instance before doing a production one. Check out technet.
