As I wrote privately to the author, my original reply was complete and utter rubbish. Lurking in the back of my mind was a niggling suspicion that I had seen this term somewhere before. And it turns out that it is indeed a feature of RMAN, whereby the Media Manager takes charge of the backup and restore job, using RMAN merely as the interface through to the database. So, in a sense, it *is* a third party backup product! Media Managers have to conform to the proxy API for it to work. RMAN falls back to doing regular backups if it's not a proxy-capable media manager after all, unless you forbid it to with a 'backup proxy only' command.
