Snapshot refresh used up a lot of rollback segment

Master table has 20M rows and takes up 16G space and was created using 8Gig of rollback segment. Subsequent refresh has 2M row, roughtly 1.6G of space and has chewed up 20G of rollback segment.

  1. Has anyone experienced this before? Any remedy/hint in terms of minimizing rollback segment usage?
  2. Is there a good rule to estimate the rollback segment usage in refresh?
  3. I understand that this is all done in one single transaction but how could the use of 20G of rollback segment be explained given that the data is taking up only 1.6G of space.
