2 tips :

one ... if you have the oracle intelligent agent running - shut it down first (lsnrctl dbsnmp_stop or agentct stop (9i) )

two ... perform a manual checkpoint first - then do a shutdown immediate (alter system checkpoint)

something I 'sometimes' tend to do ... and I think a lot of people do this ... (1) perform a shutdown abort - (2) startup - (3) shutdown immediate
