Hi John

It's just one of those things you'll pick up on the way... Learning by doing.
Most GUI stuff on unix has something to do with the X Windows System which provides GUI services to applications. Perhaps you will come in contact with related technology like Motif, CDE, Xlib, the X protocol, and X toolkit.

A lot of Oracle's software needs an 'X server' to be able to display "themselves", like the Universal Installer (how did you install the DB btw? ;-))
