How was the backup done? If you just copied the datafiles while the database was up without placing the tablespaces in backup mode, there's no guarantee you can recover. If you shut the database down before doing the backup, you can restore the files and get back to the point in time of the backup. If you also have all of the redo logs since the backup, you might be able to do point in time recovery to bring the database back to the state it was in before the accident. The latter should probably be done by a DBA though.
