Sounds like the source code for Oracle is kept as a main copy, then once a release version is ready, it is rewritten for each type of system it needs to run on (NT, UNIX, Linux, etc) according to that main copy. Branching off for operating system differences only at the last minute would keep it more consistent across different platforms.
