JRE hangs when trying to install 8.1.7

I'm trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 server on Linux 7.1. I've run through all the pre-install stuff, re-checked it. I installed jdk118_v3-glibc-2.1.3.

Linux is running on an Intel platform with 256 RAM.

When I run runInstaller in an xterm shell as the oracle user, the jre starts up and hangs at the 'please wait...' - doesn't really hang, top shows it using > 90% cpu.

The GUI window never pops up...

Any ideas?
