If I did not yet have a piece of hardware to run it ... I would not use
Oracle on any of the hardware you are considering. While Oracle can
definitely handle terabyte datamarts ... it is not necessarily the optimum
solution.
I'd go straight to NCR and explore Teradata. And then do a side-by-side comparison of the two. But hardware wise I'd go with HP or SUN. Compaq is a joke at the terabyte size and IBM too expensive and not at the top of Oracle's bug-fix priority list.
Oracle sells a transparent gateway to Teradata that, in some cases, allows the best of both worlds. Oracle's packages, procedures, and triggers with Teradata's ability to handle massive amounts of data (do not buy the Teradata people's claims about their procedures and triggers ... they are no match for Oracle).
(Just one person's opinion. And BTW you can host Oracle databases on the Non-TPA node of a Teradata machine).
