DESC difference between 7 & 8?

We're in the process of moving from 7.3.4 on Netware to 8.1.7 on Win2K. I was dismayed to discover that the DESC command acts differently on the 2 servers. Is this controllable? Maybe the defaults are set differently?

When connected to the 7.3.4 server DESC lists both field names & datatypes. When connected to the 8.1.7 server DESC lists only the field names. If there's not a default setting I can change is there a script I can run to list both field names & datatypes? We've been relying on this as a quick way to check the datatypes when writing applications.
