Urgent help

Hi all,
I am having a strange problem. I would be greatful if anyone can help me out. The production database never had any statistics collected for Cost Based Optimizer. So I ran the oracle utility to collect the stats i.e 'DBMS_STATS.GATHER_SCHEMA_STATS '<SCHEMA>'. After running this logging on suddenly takes 5 minutes where it used to take 15 secs. What could the problem be?? So we restored the old databse without statistics & now it is back to normal it takes 15 secs to log on.
