Here's what always works for me...courtesy of "Vicki" on OraFAQ.com a while ago:

I have found a solution for the installation problems with JREW on Pentium 4 machines. The error is something like "JREW has caused an invalid page fault in module JAVAI.DLL ...". First, go to
http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.2/jre/download-windows.html and download and install a Java Runtime Environment that is compatible with the P4 processor. You can either download the 1.2.2_007 or the newest version, 1.3.

Next, if you are installing from a CD, copy all the files from the CD into a folder on your hard drive.

Now, search the Oracle installation folder for a file called symcjit.dll. Rename this file so that the installation doesn't use it. Instead, the installation will use the one that is in the JRE folder.

Now, install away!
