If you literally mean "ALTER TABLESPACE ...OFFLINE" before copying the files that is **NOT** a hot backup -- to do a hot backup you must issue an "ALTER TABLESPACE...BEGIN BACKUP", copy all the files in the TS & then issue "ALTER TABLESPACE...END BACKUP." Anything else will NOT work. Also make sure you do ALL tablespaces (except TEMPORARY tablespaces) & backup the control file as well using "ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO '<path/filename>'".
