Before installing Oracle on kernel 2.4.* and glibc2.2 you havto check if glibc2.1 compatibility packages are installed.

Try to turn off powersaving everywhere, from BIOS upto kernel and X. Or it can be induced by problems in above item.

As far as I know Oracle did not sertify RH7.0 for O8i. But you can try item 1.

PS/ If you are stiked to RH, use RH6.2 (kernel 2.2.19) to run Oracle without major problems.
If you want kernel 2.4 and glibc2.2 - play with compatibility patches. I was unsuccessfull in that and gave it up after several trials.
