Steve, I think someone in this thread may already have mentioned this,
but I'll ask it again..... are you sure you're not stepping on the disk
label(s) of the physical device(s) when you create the LVs?  Stay away
from block 0!  I'm not sure whether your OS/LVM prevents this from happening
automatically or whether the sysop has to be vigilant in this respect.
