Hi,

I actually have Oracle 8.1.7.1 installled on Red Hat 7.1. A buddy of mind toughed it out for an entire weekend searching google and with trail and error was able get it working and document all the things he did.

He passed his instructions on to me and it's really quite easy after that. Actually all of the fustrations were really related to defects in the Oracle Installer and scripts, as well as lack of correct documentaton on how to preform all of the preset up steps.

I think there is a serious problem with the jre that oracle ships with the installer. it's actually an IBM jre 1.1.8. This is not at all the jre that has been provided by Sun based on the documentation I have read in Oracle's manuals. .

I installed by database over a month ago, now I'm working on being able to connect to the database from a seperate machine. This wasn't to big of a problem, once I got the listener started. But I notice I can only connect using Net8, but I want to connect using SQL NET 2. (which forms50 uses) I can connect to the Oracle Enterprise 8.1.7.1 on installed on my Windows 2000 machine using net 8 and sqlnet 2, but not to the one on linux using sqlnet 2.

Any ideas what I need to add to the configuration of the listener to get this to work.

The other problem I have is now, I can't run the installer or any of oracles gui tools under linux at all,

I tried running runInstaller again and it just sits there, same thing happens when I try to run netasst or DBA Studio, schema manager. I reboot and try it again with nothing running and i still can't get it to load.

Has anyone had this problem?

Thanks in advance
Gerald
