Oracle XSL vs Instant Saxon Performance

I have tested XSL translation using Oracle PL/SQL and Instant Saxon 6.4.3 to translate one XML document (400KB) to another XML document (15KB). Using Oracle 8.1.7 to do it takes about 35 seconds but using Instant Saxon it takes about 3 seconds.

I am running both on the same box: P3-850, 512MB RAM, Win2k Server.

Is this consistent with your experience? Is there anything I can do to get better performance out of Oracle?

Thanks,
