no listener - help!

I am running an Oracle 8i database on an AIX system (release 3). When I try to test the connection service on the same host (or a different one) using the Network Assistant, I get a "no listener error." So far as I can tell, a listener is defined in the service table and in the Oracle configuration files.

Any suggestions?
