8.1.7 is certainly available for Solaris on Intel, although I had to contact Oracle directly to get a version.

Interesting that Oracle consider this platform a niche. I rather hope they don't decide to discontinue the port. Is there any way to check on Oracle intentions, other than rumours?

My own experience over the last year has seen phenomenal growth for this platform. I had to get a copy from Oracle to test it for our clients, almost all of whom see great value in using Solaris on Intel, as these machines provide value for money (around 4 times bang for buck) compared to Sun Sparc boxes. I personally favour the reliability and supportability of Sun Sparc, but it's hard to argue against such competition on price. Solaris still remains a great Unix OS and 'well-behaved' code written for Solaris can usually be compiled against either hardware platform without too much trouble. I suspect this is why we and many of our third-party suppliers have Solaris Intel versions of software. (Linux is much less common, presumably because more effort is involved to do the port and support it into the future).

Regards

Ray
