Howard is right. Oracle 8.1.3 is not a very good version to start with.
Upgrade it to Oracle 8.1.7, or download from technet.oracle.com



  Each version of database comes with its installation Guide. Installing in
Win2000 and WinNT are straightfoward. If you are using Unix, read the
environment setting eg ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_SID, TWO_TASKS, LD_LIBRARY_PATH
etc. Anyhow, installing in Unix is pretty straightfoward also. Also, remember
to adjust the kernel/system parameter.
