  What exactly do you mean "is not very useful for that"?

   Thin driver is type 4. No client install. Type 4-- pure java.    Java works on linux as well as many other operating systems.

   Web server to db. assuming a servlet? The servlet can use the thin driver.

    Works just fine.

    So, what are your problems?
