IIRC, he also needs to re-apply the "chmod" command to the ORACLE executable in $ORACLE_HOME/bin so that it becomes 4755? There is an install script that does set all group and file protection masks as they should be. It needs to be re-run after changing a uid and gid.
There used to be a module that had to be re-compiled and re-linked to the ORACLE executable when gid changed. Dunno if it's still there, but used to be a problem in V7 and earlier. Best course of action was to re-link and re-grant rights after changing the gid/uid.
