Indexing long data type columns

Hi All,


I have a table with a column of type LONG.
Now when I try to index the table based on the long column I get a 
"ORA-00997: illegal use of LONG datatype" error.



How do I go around this problem??? 


Is it just impossible to create indexes on LONG data types??
I am using Oracle 8.1.7
