thanks for the info.
but how does the machine know the name of the DB for the connection and
which port the listener is on? is that part of the host string? i saw a
reference to an "alias" in the CF help documentation, but it sounds like
that has to be set up by someone else. it didn't really go into enough
detail for me to be sure whether the alias was on my machine or the
server where the DB is...
any clues??
