Why a huge log file will slow down connection attempts? Are there any hard evidence supporting this claim? The system only needs to seek to the end of the file in order to append new entries and this operation cost is more or less independent of the size of the file.

Of course, one should periodically clean up the log file to prevent wasting valuable space.
