This depends only on what you need :

if you have a 24/24h and 7/7j application and you tolerate no data lost, you may should take another OS than NT;
if you have a huge datawarehouse with thousands of connections, you may consider one system supporting load-balancing;
if your departement has 10 persons who want only a system to consult your every day's salary evolution, I think that Oracle under NT 4 server is sufficient. And it works well with RAID-5 !

So, the choix in an architecture is not only technical, but you should consider it in a company-oriented contexte.
