Check the value of the keys in your registry (HKLM/Software/Oracle). Especially NLS_LANG, NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE, NLS_DATE_FORMAT. NLS_DATE_FORMAT must not contain AD, AM, BC, DAY, DY, MONTH, MON, PM format elements...

You can also activate the sqlnet trace to get the alter session generated and see what's the invalid option.
