OAS 9i installation problems on Red Hat Linux 7

Every time I run the "./runInstaller" I keep getting an error that the Java Runtime Environment can not be found at either "p/bin/jre" or in certain cases "/bin/jre." I have installed the latest version of both Sun JDK as well as JRE v1.3. They were put into the "/usr/java/jdk1.3/" and
"/usr/java/jre1.3/" folders KDE v2.0 Package Manager. I know that the
"oracle" user account has the correct access writes to these directories.
The user accounts/groups and the environment variables have also been setup. I don't know what I have missed...any help/guidance would be appreciated. Also, does an Oracle database have to be installed on this machine or is it possible to set it up so that it can act as a standalone app server...passing requests via SQL net connection to dedicated Oracle database servers?
