How get started?

Sorry if this seems like an easy question, but I'm new to Oracle and would appreciate any help.

I installed Oracle8i Personal Edition on Windows 98. Started SQL*Plus, and entered user name "system" and password "manager" (also tried "scott" / "tiger"), but I don't know what put for host string. A colleague suggested it's the "SID" listed in my Registry. In there I found:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\...] @="OraOLEDB.Oracle"
"OLEDB_SERVICES"=dword:ffffffff

So I tried "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for host string, which accesses the Web but gets error message "ORA-12154: TNS:Could not resolve service name".

Someone else said I need to create a database client, but I don't know how and couldn't find anything in the online help, which seems to focus on describing the multitude of tools for experienced DBAs.

Anyone know how to best get started and/or good books or Websites for newbies? Thanks!
