Can not create table just hangs

Installed Oracle 8.1.7 a month ago and it still unstable.

Today, when I try to create a table from DBA studio or SQL PLUS it just hang, until closing it.

I went to the server to shut down the instance from the DBA studio and it also hang with nothing else
can be done except killing it, then I started the instance back and I was able to shutdown normally
then start again with no problems.

what could be causing this problem??

is there a patch for 8.1.7 release yet???
