It could be because of slow network
response resulting in a time out;

Write a small script of which just
creates a sqlplus session and runs a simple query, Schedule the script through both Oracle enterprise manager and NT scheduler to run every half an hour.
Monitor for couple of days. Eliminate
possibilities of any sporadic network problems. See if you get any error messages from these debug scripts.

Also, create a tar via Oracles's metalink support after you narrow down the problem.

May be some NT or Patch is the solution.
