I shall consider myself suitably chastised for my lack of forethought. Apparently one of the support staff copied the catrman.sql script from an 8.0.5 instance to the 8.1.5 installation. Seeing it missing sent fear into his heart and to rectify the situation (which was not necessary) the file was placed in the requisite location. Performing a rudimentary search of the rdbms/admin directory unearthed a copy of the script; seeing it in 8.1.5 I naturally presumed it was also in 8.1.6. As Howard so nicely phrased it (and John so abruptly stated) its presence is no longer necessary.
I have never run the script in 8.1.5, and we have setup RMAN for testing purposes, so seeing the file where it was supposed to be led me to believe it was still part of the 8i installation.
I apologise to all who may have tried to take my 'advice' and failed.
