I've been experimenting with RMAN backing up to tape using ADSM. It is not the easiest thing to understand initially but once established I find the process very elegant for the reasons stated in other posts plus RMAN has a very good reporting tool letting you query exactly what has been backed up and when and what has expired. I have also run many recovery scenarios successfully and with great ease.
One point to consider: one of the RMAN's big benefits incremental backup is only available with Oracle Enterprise Edition.
