Oracle9i is a generic term that covers both the database and the application server, and represents the platform (as oppsoed to the eBusiness Suite, which represents the Oracle business applications. So currently Oracle9i includes the Oracle9i Application Server (iAS), and the Oracle8i Database (8.1.7). Later, Oracle9i will include the Oracle9i Application Server, and the new Oracle9i Database.
The Oracle9i Database is a significant increase in functionality over Oracle8i.
