I'm trying to determine what specifically I need to do to ensure consistent backup and recovery in a replicated Oracle database environment. Specifically I'm running a 3-way Multi-Master replicated database. I have backup scripts that run at each master site. I'm running in archive log mode at each site. The backup scripts alter each table space into backup mode one at a time and then I do file system copies while in backup mode. I then backup the control files and archived log files, etc.. (the standard "hot" backup procedures). My backup process works fine in a stand-alone database environment, as I've had to do several successful recoveries in the past. While reading in the Oracle Replication guide I found the following statement "Follow the guidelines for distributed database backups outlined in the Oracle8i Administrator's Guide when creating backups of replicated databases". I've searched through the reference but find no description of "distributed database backups". I've also searched through the "Backup and Recovery Guide" and it only makes brief mention (no detail) of "Performing Media Recovery in a Distributed Environment". The Administrators Guide states that if you don't follow very specific backup and recovery processes that you may not be able to recover the database, yet none of the references give any information on how the backup process differs in a Replicationed environment. I'm most concerned about my backup procedures.
Do I need to change my backup processes?
Solaris 2.7
Oracle 8.1.6
