If you're doing development, do you actually need archiving switched on? I'm a DBA in a development environment and we don't bother. If a fault occurs on one of the databases, we restore from the previous days' backup. The developers aren't usually that attached to their data so it doesn't create any problems doing this. In addition to doing daily cold backups, I do daily full exports as well so that if we need to get back the data for a specific table from backup we can do that without having to wipe out all the rest of the data.
