Although I use and have had good luck with Oracle for many years, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a whole new game in five years, with emerging companies and new technologies we don't even think or hear about much today.

Object DBMS's may begin to steal thunder from relational, just as relational sealed the fate of hierarchical and network DBMS's a few years back. Witness the growing usage of rather lightweight products like Cloudscape, etc. which work within the J2EE realm.

With plenty of cutting-edge activity today in areas like Java, mobile, and wireless, who knows for sure where databases will be in five years? I only know from past experience: don't get married to a technology or a company. Better to keep the tent pegs shallow, because things can change quickly in this business.
