Which version of Oracle 8i did you install? You need Personal Oracle 8i, Oracle 8i is for NT only. You should be capable of getting it working by reading the installation manual and the getting started manual.
Oracle used to have installation tips at one of their sites, either www.oracle.com or http://technet.oracle.com

Two weeks to master Oracle to this level is IMHO just way too short.
