Thanks for the info on size, and the verification that it is just the size of your control file that is affected.
It was in Oracle8 that they changed MAXDATAFILES works so that it now determines the amount of space set aside in the control file for the number of datafiles at the time you initial create the database, however if you go over this number the control file will expand automatically.
