'SAN' covers a multitude of sins.
Provided your setup ensures that a write
request is not confirmed until the data
is definitely secured, a SAN is certainly
reasonable option.
The only SAN I have used was located about three free from the computer, with a very short piece of dedicated fibre, so does not, perhaps conform to the standard image of a SAN.
However, with this setup, the performance was excellent - in part due to the fact that most of the discs in the box were striped at 64K, so the I/O load was very evenly spread, and a big load coming down the fibre could be distributed very rapidly.
