Am I to understand that the semaphore parameters in /etc/system have been removed? I can't say that is the cause of this error, but it certainly would prevent you from starting the database.
My guess is that the errors you got when the semaphore parameters were in the system file were harmless. I forget the exact error, but there usually is an error of sorts that is harmless. Something about something not being installed.
