There's no confusion at all, none.. did I say confusion?
But I was just reading Oracle error messages...
ORA-01090: shutdown in progress - connection is not permitted
Cause: The SHUTDOWN command was used to shut down a running Oracle instance,
disallowing
any connects to Oracle.
Action: Wait for the instance to restart or contact the database
administrator.
Clearly they're speaking about shutting down the instance,
ORA-01097: cannot shutdown while in a transaction - commit or rollback
Cause: An attempt was made to shut down the database while a transaction was
in progress.
Action: Either commit or rollback the current transaction and then attempt
to shut down the
database
Or are the talking about shutting down the database? But again, no confusion ;-)
Reinier.
