  Without any doubt the internal structure of the index has deteriorated over time. Issue the following commands analyze index <index_name> validate structure; select blocks, btree_space, used_space, pct_used from index_stats;

If pct_used is significantly below 80 percent rebuild the index and see how much space you gain.
