AFAICR, HP installs use to hang once upon a time if the NFS daemons weren't up and running (or was it NIS ??). Seriously, it was some totally unrelated network daemon that had to be up before the install could continue. I remember receiving an alert via Metalink newsletter some few weeks after it happenned, so it might have come back again. Here's the note...

Problem Description

The Oracle Installer hangs indefinitely with no error messages. The installer hangs both in the mottif version or the character version. The installer is activated by
$./orainst /m
$./orainst /c

commands. The installer is invoked from the customer's client machine using a telnet session. The installer hangs with an hour glass for an indefinite period.

Solution Description

Starting the NFS Client and the NFS Server would resolve the problem.

Explanation

The installed version of 11.00 on xprod did not have nfs.client and nfs.server enabled. The problem could be discovered by performance measuring tools like glance. The processes orainst.cm and orainst.motif were in a wait state for "nfs." The nfs services were enabled by editing /etc/rc.config.d/nfsconf and setting NFS_CLIENT="1" and NFS_SERVER="1". Since the system was rebooted it wasn't necessary to start the nfs services manually. To start them manually, root would run "/sbin/init.d/nfs.client start" and "/sbin/init.d/nfs.server start".

Note : This NFS Client and NFS Server are installed by default on

       HPUX-10.20
.
