dbshut script does not work w/ 2 instances

I have 2 databases on one machine. Oracle 8.1.6 on Sun sparc solaris 2.8.

The dbstart script does not seem to work with 2 databases on one machine. It works fine on machines with only one database.

Basically, it starts when I execute the dbshut command:

$ORACLE_HOME/bin> . dbshut

...blah blah blah

SVRMGR> Connected.
SVRMGR> Then it just hangs and hangs and doesn't do anything. If I hit ctrl+C, it skips shutting down the first instance, then it shuts down the second instance properly. Is there a fix for this?
