I don't know exactly what happens, but we have a similar Problem with distributet transactions over database-links. In the last weeks I often phoned Oracle-Support and It came out that Version 8.1.5 is extreme buggy. Our Departement got a paper from Oracle, in which it is recommended not to use 8.1.5. On the Oracle-metalink-homepage is a patch, but that seems to be buggy too. So the best solution is to upgrade to 8.1.6.2, which will arrive in mid-september (For Unix and Solaris it is out already). It seems that Oracle has some problems with the network under WinNT and under some circumstances one of the threads hangs.
I would recommend to look at the metalink-homepage, if there is a known bug for your problem.
