Problem with Long

Hello,

we have a small concern on one of our applications functioning under Oracle 8i and developed in Php.
The error is met:
"ORA-01704 string literal too long
Cause: A quoted string specified as a constant was too long. Action: Quoted strings may not contain more than 2000 characters" when one wants to insert character strings higher than 2000 characters in fields of the long type.
The Insert command goes (neither in Php, nor under SqlPlus). How can one solve the problem?
