8i Personal Edition- protocol error

I am not able to get a successful connection to my database through Net8 Assistant. No mater how I configure a service name or what protocol I use, I usually get the same error- "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error". The error message explanation in the Oracle documentation doesn't give much help for this error. What are some possible causes for this problem? Could it be my machine, or is it more likely the software? Thanks a million. jeff
