Enterprise Manager - newbie question

I'm trying to set up a simple Oracle database for the first time and want to configure the Enterprise Manager (I assume this is a good idea). The documentation says I need two seperate computers running Oracle: one for my real database, and one for the Enterprise Manager repository. Is this really necessary? Is it not possible to install an Oracle database on just one machine and manage using Enterprise Manager running on the same machine? Seems like this should be possible.
