securing connect string

Hi,

My customer uses MTS (windows NT) and oracle server (solaris) for a custom application. The connect string to access the database is stored within the NT registry. The userid and password had become common knowledge and developers can easily gain access to this string via visual basic.
Are there any suggestions on a secure solution to store a connect string ?

Thanks in advance.
